A mindfully designed experience, the new home of the Halicioglu Data Science Institute supports UC San Diego’s burgeoning field of analytical exploration.

Together with KdA Architects, we worked with the department to reimagine an older campus building that was being retrofitted to accommodate the rapidly growing Institute. The 45,000 SF, four-story tenant improvement brought a new level of flexibility, interaction and fluid technology to the updated labs, faculty offices, and research workspaces.

Dynamic storytelling.

Building on the data science systems that students and faculty use everyday, we used the elegant and relatable visual language to use throughout the experiential design. In referencing the complex and elegant charts and maps used in data & analytics, this new space welcomes curiosity and bold intellectual conversation.

Clear, concise and creative.

With the Institute’s workspaces spread over four separate levels, it was important to create a wayfinding and identity system that made working and navigating the corridors and offices easy and enjoyable. The bold color story and environmental graphics serve to create both a vibrant collaboration space and a sense of place that’s reflective of HDSI.

Smart spaces for
thoughtful work.

The graduate and faculty offices are spaces that are meant for both solo concentration and conversational work between colleagues and peers. By working with a neutral base palette paired with modern, flexible furniture systems, the interiors are both functional and inspiring.

Tactile touchpoints.

Even with all the power that technology offers, there is not a substitute for the touch and feel of natural materials. Textured fibers, bright colors and warm woodgrains bring layers of coastal California into the academic world.
